New Road Wetland Preserve
In partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, GTA is permanently protecting and restoring nearly 50 acres of habitat at our New Road Wetland Preserve in South Brunswick. This important wetland preserve is within GTA’s Hudson-Raritan Estuary Conservation Focus Area.
This property and the surrounding areas were historically comprised of large spans of scrub-shrub, forested and emergent wetlands. 20th century residential and roadway development resulted in more rapid surface runoff and the colonization of non-native, invasive plant species within these large wetland complexes. The current degraded conditions onsite dictate the need to enhance and preserve these valuable, urban wetlands and the local and regional functions that they support.
In 2023 and 2024, GTA will be working to abate non-native plant colonies, improve the density and complexity of herbaceous and understory plants in wetlands and wetland buffers, and to work toward the permanent protection and active long term stewardship of this property.
