Baltimore's Working Waterfront Communities

Special American Places
Green Trust Alliance focuses approximately 90% of our programming and conservation work in three strategically developed focus areas in Maryland and New Jersey. All three are areas are areas of economically vital and historically important coastlines with internationally known fish, wildlife, and habitats nestled right in between all the human activity. All three of these areas are primarily made up of working class communities whose residents make our coastal economy work, and whose presence has made our regional Mid-Atlantic culture diverse and culturally vibrant. Importantly, all three of our strategic conservation focus areas are made up of predominantly overburdened and underserved communities who have historically beared much of the public health and open space costs of our ports and coastal industries.
One of these, and currently GTA's flagship program, is the tidal portion of the Patapsco River where Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County all meet. We call it Green Trust Baltimore, or Baltimore's Working Waterfronts. Our goal here is to utilize our technical expertise and local community knowledge (most of our staff are City residents) to connect GTA's large scale ecosystem restoration projects, with sustained and trustworthy land trust activities including public access improvement, urban tree implementation, and upgrading the area's many aging and abandoned stormwater facilities. Our smallest projects in Baltimore have a budget of less than $1,000....and our largest have topped $10 million! Together, they're all important, and they are each important.
